Supplements – are they worth it?

Supplements are an ever growing industry as they range from seriously synthetic pharmaceuticals all the way to homeopathic, natural ones.

Many clients often ask what supplements they should be taking to help assist them with their weight loss journey, or even those who are in search of simply better health. Despite every person being different, and each person has different goals in regard to body composition, I thought I would list what I feel are the most important for any person, regardless of long term goal.

Flaxseed Oil – Flax is easily the richest source of omega-3 fatty acid, which helps assist with eliminating inflammation, boosts cognitive brain function, increases mood and helps with long-term weight loss by curbing cravings and increasing the body’s metabolic rate which allows you to burn excess fats your body doesn’t want. It also helps the stomach to retain food for longer periods, which wards of hunger in between meals. Dosage: 1-2 capsules with each meal.

Multi Vitamin – Most of us will struggle to take in all essential minerals and vitamins via our food each day, so by taking a multi vitamin we allow our systems the benefit to do so. Multis provide the RDA of daily vitamins, and taken in either capsule or liquid form are absorbed more efficiently in your body. Dosage: 1-2 per day.

Phey/Whey Protein – You can get plenty of protein rich foods via your diet, but protein powders have additional benefits. Drinking a protein shake after every workout speeds muscle recovery and supplies your body with the amino acids needed for muscle growth (no ladies, you will not turn into the hulk by drinking one) Protein shakes between meals can help ward of binge eating, as protein keeps our stomach fuller for longer, and they generally tend to be quite low in calories. Phey is plant-based (brown rice, hemp, quinoa) and Whey is dairy based. Avoid soy based proteins. Dosage: 1-2 shakes with water or non-dairy milk each day.

Primal Greens – Powdered greens are always given the scrunched face by most people, but don’t over look this amazing supplement. They offer dense packed nutrition, which nourishes and strengthens your body’s systems. They contain cleansing, alkalising grass juices, algae and prebiotics. They enhance recovery, boost energy and allow over-all well being. Dosage: 1 teaspoon a day (first thing in the morning) or add to protein shake.

Hope this has helped with your journey towards a cleaner, better life
